Waste
is classified into two categories: solid and hazardous. Solid waste is
usually non-regulated and can be disposed of at the local landfill. Hazardous
waste is regulated and must be disposed of in accordance with state and
federal rules.
To be proactive, organizations are encouraged to institute reuse and recycling
programs to reduce waste going to local landfills, as well as, consider
less hazardous materials in operations where feasible.
Durham and Wake County have made recycling the law. Both counties have
ordinances banning certain recyclables from landfills and organizations
should keep these bans in mind when creating their recycling programs.
